-¿No?-

Espero le interese a alguien por ahí: Whether He the quaint savant's power doth held I now not, Albeit aetat a thousand stars' birth He is - Zuoth I that for reasons to me oblivious August of a granditude of servants is He held, And by plastic consonantry e'en more servants to the host addéd are - Pelf they are, dare I say! Maugre His diurnal serphic deviltry I say that deviltry - 'tis forsooth deviltry! - Mind not this in scintillating shades clad is; To claim the glore is He suffer'd. "Grant me the fatlings", gouth He, "the fatter the better!", And died they of starvation; They are not slaughtering their fatlings - They are slaughtering 'hemselves.
The story takes place in 19th century England among the rich and the glamorous. Cain C. Hargreaves, at age 12, became the young heir to the Hargreaves name and estate after meeting Rifuel Raffit - Riff - who was an ex-medical student before becoming Cain's valet then butler.
The story begins when Cain is 17 years old and living in London away from the castle in which he grew up. The first series of stories are mainly self standing and tells of how the young Earl Cain solve various murder mysteries with the help of Riff and his huge collection of poison.
As the volumes progress a larger plot is uncovered as Cain's past is revealed and he discovers that a secret organization led by someone from his past is out after the lives of him and everyone he loves. When Cain finds that those dying around him are not seperate incidents by all connected to the said organisation, he must uncover it and put it to a stop before he himself becomes the next victim.
Slowly Riff's unpleasent past is revealed as well and we learn that it was only through protecting the "young master Cain" that Riff was able to recover from his own tragedies and move on in life, or so we think.
Cain, himself changes too. As he faces more and more of life's hardships only to find that Riff is always there to help, he slowly changed from the indifferent, selfish brat who never recovered from his unspeakable childhood, into a somewhat caring person.
Earl/Count Cain is a story full of turns and twists, where nothing is as expected. One can look at the stories as a more romantic rendition of Sherlock Holmes where Cain is the famous detective and Delilah is the society of Professor Morairty. Each story takes after a piece of European literation, everything from William Shakespeare to Fraz Kafka to Mother Goose. Cain brings the glamour and intrigue of the Victorian age to life in a way that only a shoujo manga can.
Cain C. Hargreaves:
The notorious "Earl of Poison" who sweeps through upper London society with grace and death. At only age 17, he has countless women at his feet, and many more fearing his very name.
Cain has an extensive collection of poison which he found in the basement of the Hargreaves Castle, a collection left by his ancestors since his family is known for killing using poison.
Cain appears to be a very cold and calculating person whose footsteps are covered with corpses but he also has a very caring side which is shown only to those he love, ie. Merryweather, his half sister and Riff, his butler.
Cain is named as such because "Cain was the first person who killed his relative." His fathered, Alexis, blamed the birth of Cain for the insanity (and eventual death) of his sister, Augusta (Cain's mother and aunt), as well as the Hargreaves family forcing him to marry someone he didn't love.
Rifuel Raffit:
Rifuel Raffit, or Riff (or Lief), was named after a butler from an old English movie. In the manga, he is Cain's loyal friend and servant whose sole purpose is to protect Cain.
Riff came from a well off family of his mother, father and younger brother. He was originally studying to become a doctor.
After a series of events uncovered in the chapter: The Stake, Riff was forced to abandon his studies due to the lack of money and was brought by Alexis Hargreaves, Cain's father, to work at the Hargreaves Castle.
There, he met the 12 year old Cain and instantly connected with the small hurt child. When Cain became Earl, Riff stayed by his side as the butler of the household and since, followed Cain in his various adventures.
As the story become more serious, it is also Riff who constantly put his life on the line in order to save his young master.
Riff is named after the butler in The Rocky Horror Show (get it? Riff Raff? Actually I don't get it. If anyone has seen the aforementioned movie, maybe you can explain).
Merryweather Hargreaves:
Merryweather, or Merry, is the half-sister of Cain. In the chapter: Sound of a Boy Hatching, she is introduced and the past of her and her mother revealed.
Merry is a very persistent but kind girl who lived in poverty with her friend Eric after the death of her mother, surviving as a fortune-teller with her friend until Cain found her.
Merry is the ray of sunshine in Cain's life. It is her presence in Cain's life that first taught him the value of love.
Alexis Hargreaves:
Cain's father and the previous Earl. Dissapeared / died when Cain was 12, but reappeared years later. When he was young, Alexis fell in love with his sister, Augusta, and had Cain with her.
Alexis is a cruel man who is ruthless and stops at nothing to get what he wants. It is rumored that he killed his own father with a poisoned ring in order to take power as the earl.
Alexis is also the founder and head of Delilah, an organization based on tarot cards. This organization is based on three tiers of power and practices black magic and frequently kills to achieve its goal.
Alexis has many perverse habits, one of the worst being the pleasure he takes in manipulating sweet innocent boys and turning them into insane killers. Jezebel as Alexis' adopted son is one of such boys.
Augusta Hargreaves:
Cain's mother and aunt who went insane after giving birth to him. She calls Cain a "demon" because of his golden green eyes and asks him where his "black wings" went before she killed herself. Cain was 12 at the time.
Nell Hargreaves:
Cain's uncle who becomes his guardian after the "death" of Alexis. Although he is very strict, he cares a lot about Cain.
Before Cain was born, he had loved Augusta and it was only with his intervention that Cain was allowed by the Hargreaves family to live. As Riff tells Cain in The Lion's Emblem, Nell is the only ally Cain has in the Hargreaves family, and the only one strong enough to help Cain.
Jezebel / "Dr. Allen":
A doctor who was adopted by Alexis, who turned him from a sweet child to a vicious and cruel man who hates Cain for being Alexis' true son.
Jezebel first appeared posing as the Hargreaves' new family doctor, Dr. Allen in Kafka. In reality, Dr. Allen had been murdered. Jezebel is Alexis' adopted son and hates Cain because he sees Cain as a competitor for Alexis' love. He envies Cain for being Alexis' real son.
Jezebel, like his fostor father, is a pot short of a pot-luck dinner. He is obsesed with dark medicine and black magic. He also has a strange and creepy interest and Cain and comes a bit too close a bit too many times of acting out on this interest and plucking out Cain's beautiful green-gold eyes.
Side note: Mitsu has a personal grudge against him because in Kafka he almost appeared to have stolen Cain from Riff. O_O; But Mitsu also believes that no one, not Delilah, not even Lucifer himself can seperate what fate (aka Yuki Kaori) put together; just look at Setsuna and Sara, Kira will attest to my claim. There's a bit of a optimisim to those who have read Juda's Kiss. ^_^ Ganbatte Cain-chan!
